Dental Surgery

Waterloo Dentist Kitchener

Forest Hill Family Dental in Kitchener, Ontario knows that when someone needs dental work done, they may be nervous about it. Some of this anxiety is caused because people do not fully understand the procedure they are about to undergo and what to expect from it. Dr. Wang and Dr. Zhao want to give patients a better understanding of what they can expect should they need dental surgery.

What Procedures are Considered Dental Surgery?

There are a number of dental procedures that require dental surgery. These include the following:

  • Removing Wisdom Teeth
  • Performing Jaw Surgery
  • Placing Dental Implants
  • Completing a Jaw Bone Grafting Procedure
  • Pre-Prosthetic Dental Surgery
  • Removing Impacted Canines
  • Having Oral Pathology Done

Some patients may also need dental surgery for more basic procedures, such as root canals, if they are anxious and need to be put to sleep, or are children and cannot sit still for long periods of time.

Why Would Someone Need Dental Surgery?

Oral surgery is done when a patient needs significant work done in or around their mouth or jaw area. These procedures are so extensive that the patient will need to be sedated in order to keep the patient comfortable. In some cases, a topical anesthetic will be used to keep the patient comfortable. However, most of the time the patient is given a stronger anesthetic or even put to sleep so the procedure can be done.

What Should One Expect When Having Dental Surgery Done?

Every procedure is different. Before a patient has dental surgery done, the dentist will meet with the patient to discuss the procedure, pre-op plans, post-op plans, and what the goal of the procedure is. This is a great time to ask the dentist any questions that you may have. Following the procedure, most patients will experience some discomfort. Most dentists recommend using over the counter pain relievers to help this discomfort. However, they may also prescribe something stronger. An antibiotic may also be prescribed if there are signs the patient may already have an infection or is prone to getting infections.

Following the surgery, it is important to follow all of the instructions given by the dentist or the clinic. These instructions will detail what can and can’t be eaten, how to relieve pain when to follow up with the dentist, and what signs are indicative of a possible infection or problem. If a patient does not follow these instructions, their healing time may be longer, they can get an infection, they can be uncomfortable, or the surgery may not be as successful as it should have been.
